Role: Senior Product Designer

Key Challenges: With their app, theScore was working with legacy code, a dated user experience, and muddled brand design for their customer’s experience. It was our job to set a modern, simplified, elegant, modular foundation and to set the brand and app up for success for years to come.

What I did: Helping to direct UX and design for Playground, we collaborated directly with Rogers Sportsnet to design and develop their new mobile app.

I include the design of theScore mobile app in my book because it was the true beginning of my career. It was the first project where I fully harnessed my digital product design skills, blending user needs with the excitement of live sports to create a digital product that was not only useful but also deeply engaging.

The complexity and content depth of theScore pushed me into uncharted territory, teaching me invaluable lessons in content management, prioritization, and design hierarchy—skills I’ve carried forward throughout my career.

Our vision was ambitious: to create a sports app that redefined the industry. Instead of simply following stakeholder directives, we saw this as a chance to break new ground. The pressure was intense, but so was the excitement. Every decision carried risk, but that’s what made the journey thrilling. When our bold approach paid off, it validated that we were creating something truly special. This project cemented my belief in pushing limits and made innovation the cornerstone of my design philosophy. It’s a mindset I’ve carried with me ever since.

The app garnered significant attention, including being named Apple’s App of the Year in its category and earning a place in the App Store Essentials Hall of Fame. This achievement set the stage for my drive to innovate and lead in every role I’ve taken on since.
